Prof. Hafil Budianto Abdulgani obtained a doctorate degree in Medicine from the University of Hawaii Medical School in 1976. He then completed integrated General Surgery residency training from 1976 to 1981 at Mercy Catholic Medical Center, Thomas Jefferson Medical Center and Children Hospital of Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania Medical School. From 1981 to 1984, he completed Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery residency training at Boston University Medical Center and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery residency training at Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He was recruited by the Government of Indonesia to serve as a Senior Consultant at the National Cardiovascular Center Rumah Sakit Harapan Kita in Jakarta from 1985 to 1995. He was summoned to train healthcare personnels and pioneered many modern open-heart surgeries and new concepts of cardiovascular postoperative care. In 1995, he was appointed as an Associate Professor in Surgery at the University of Padjadjaran Faculty of Medicine and Chief Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Hasan Sadikin General Hospital. He established modern cardiovascular surgical facilities and pioneered many surgical innovations in Bandung from 1995 to 2007.
